Artists Ashara began in 2024 with the effort and passion of a talented sculptor, Bezuyekassech Tesfa, who sought to mobilize Ethiopian artists in North America. Bezuyekassech identified over 25 Ethiopian artists living in North America and shared his vision with them.
The first Zoom meeting of the group occurred on December 1, 2024, with ten Ethiopian artists participating. These founding members were:
1. Alemayehu
2. Leya Zerihun
3. Asidesach Debebe
4. Mekbib Gebertsadik
5. Melaku Abebe
6. Solomon Gizachew
7. Fetun Getachew
8. Meseret Giday
9. Serkalem Teferi
10. Bezuyekassech Tesfa
During this inaugural meeting, the group discussed the vision, goals, and objectives of the organization they envisioned establishing. A second meeting took place on December 8, 2024, where two additional participants, Tesfay Wondemu and Tigist Hailgeberil, joined the group. During this meeting, five board members were elected:
1. Bezuyekassech Tesfa
2. Asidesach Debebe
3. Leya Zerihun
4. Mekbib Gebertsadik
5. Tesfay Wondemu
With the dedication of the elected board members and the efforts of the broader group, the institute was officially registered as a non-profit organization in Virginia in 2025 to serve Ethiopian artists in the diaspora.
