About the Artist
Rahel Hailemariam was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With her family, she moved to the United States of America during her elementary school years. She graduated with honors from Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland. Having won the Banneker Scholarship, she attended University of Maryland, College Park campus. Initially she majored in Chemical Engineering and later changed her major to Accounting. After returning to Ethiopia and hearing a recording of herself on tape at the tender age of four stating that she was most happy making art, she decided to change her major to art. She excelled once again academically once she had changed her major to Fine Art. She participated in Professor Claudia Demonte’s “Women of the World” collection by contributing an 8”X8” piece representing Ethiopia. Professor Demonte’s collection of the 8”X8” artworks, which were representations of what a woman is from the perspective of each woman artist, travelled and was displayed throughout the world. It was finally purchased by an unknown collector. After graduating from university, in order to make a decent living, she worked in the insurance field. Rahel is now trying to return to her first love, which is making art full-time.
Artist Statement
Rahel Hailemariam

As an artist, my work is deeply rooted in the artistic legacy of my Ethiopian ancestors. I have always been fascinated by Ethiopian art's rich and intricate heritage, a tradition that seamlessly blends function, symbolism, and beauty. From an early age, I was captivated by the remarkable craftsmanship of Ethiopia’s ancient artworks, both decorative and functional.
My admiration extends to the uniquely designed Ethiopian crosses. Each manner elaborates patterns that reflect spiritual depth and cultural identity. These sacred symbols, passed down through generations, inspire my creative expression. Additionally, I am drawn to the ancient traditional and medicinal paintings of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. These vibrant and storytelling artworks serve as religious expressions and historical records of faith, healing, and wisdom.
Through my artistic journey, I strive to honor and reinterpret these ancestral influences, bringing them into contemporary conversations while preserving their authenticity. I seek to share this beauty with the world, ensuring these timeless traditions inspire and resonate across generations.
