About the Artist

Wubetu Jemera was born in Shewa Robit, a town in the northern Wollo province of Ethiopia. From a young age, he was passionate about drawing, often illustrating images in his exercise books and creating science-related sketches for his classmates. After completing high school, he moved to Dessie for work, where he encountered numerous artworks that developed his interest in art. He met the renowned local artist Mulugata Abate during this time, whose mentorship significantly shaped Wubetu’s artistic development. Working alongside Mulugata, he improved his skills in charcoal drawing and gained a profound understanding of creative techniques.

In 1994, Wubetu enrolled at the Master Art Institute, where he refined his craft and graduated after two years of training. His deep faith in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church led him to specialize in church painting and restoration. One of his early projects in Addis Ababa gave him a crucial opportunity to concretely define the way to a successful career in religious art.

Wubetu has exhibited his work in several group and solo shows across Ethiopia, including at the Russian Cultural Institute and the Imperial Hotel. In 2001, he immigrated to the United States of America with his wife and four children, continuing his dedication to church painting. His works can be found in churches throughout Maryland, Virginia, and beyond. Today, he resides in Alexandria, Virginia, where he remains committed to preserving and sharing Ethiopian religious and cultural art.

Art is a fundamental part of my life. It is a form of therapy, a language of expression, and a bridge that connects me with the world. It allows me to communicate my thoughts, emotions, and vision beyond words. Art is not just something I create; it is something I live and breathe.
Inspiration comes to me through nature, human experiences, and the cultural richness surrounding me. Ideas spark in my mind whenever I encounter something fascinating, compelling me to transform them into visual narratives. Art provides me with focus, clarity, and positive energy, serving as a constant source of growth and exploration.
My work is deeply rooted in the beauty of Ethiopian culture, heritage, and nature. Ethiopia’s diverse traditions, vibrant colors, and rich historical narratives shape my artistic journey. Through my art, I seek to honor and preserve these elements while sharing them with a broader audience. Whether through painting or mixed media, my creations celebrate the essence of Ethiopian identity, connecting the past with the present.
Art has the power to inspire, heal, and educate. It is a universal language that transcends barriers and connects people from different backgrounds. I hope to ignite interest, appreciation, and dialogue by showcasing Ethiopian culture through my work. More than a personal effort, my art acknowledges a heritage that continues to shape me.
Ultimately, I aim to create art that resonates with the soul, fosters cultural understanding, and brings beauty into everyday life.
